Daddy-Daughter Date

Spending one-on-one quality time with our kiddies is something that is so important to me and that I want to make a priority throughout my children's lives. Some of my favorite memories when I was younger was spending time with just my mom, or just my dad. I think being the only girl allowed me to have more of those moments which I am so grateful for.

As jealous as I am that my little girl got to go out with her daddy, I cherish these pictures of them building memories and their oh-so important relationship. I can't wait till Stewart gets a little older and Paul and I will split up, each taking one to go out on a date. I hope that Lily learns through these times with her daddy the kind of man that she should look for one day. Because he really is the greatest and I want her to feel as special and loved as I do her whole life.

Dear Daddy - We Carved a Pumpkin!

"I miss you! I love you! I carved pumpkins today. I play with Gunner today at the spooky adventure. I drew a picture and then I did another one by myself and then it was really fun to carve it and draw it. Stewart's been naughty today? I been good today. Um, I miss you really really really much! Um, one more thing..do you miss mommy? I love wearing my costume and I love when you wear your costume and Stewart. Hope we have fun at trick-or-treating!" -- Lily

Lily Quotes: 2nd Edition

October 30, 2013 - Right after singing Lily's night-time song to her she tells me - "Even if you're not a good singer, Heavenly Father still loves you."

October 18, 2013 - I was preparing my very first Sharing Time lesson (yes, I am Primary President - shocker!!) and trying to gage how basic I need to be with the Junior Primary, I asked Lily to tell me something about the temple. She said, "You love the temple song because you're going to die". Completely lost for words that is what came to her mind when I mention "temple", I remembered about 2 weeks ago I was singing "I Love to See the Temple" to her for her night-time song. After the song I explained to her that it was my very most favorite song because it teaches us the importance of the temple. That we can be together as a family forever because Mommy and Daddy were married in the temple. I probably should have stopped there but I told her that even when I die, we will be together again because of the blessings of the temple. She was nervous for a few days that I was going to be dying, but after reassuring her multiple times that it wouldn't be "until she was Grandma Heslop and Grandma Stewart's ages" she calmed down a bit. But, now when she thinks of temple, she immediately thinks of my death. The things that happen when I try to teach a child the gospel. Now with my new Primary calling, I will get lots of practice at it!

March 30, 2013 - When I was getting Lily ready for bed tonight, I raised my eyebrows while trying to pull her jammie top over her head. Noticing the wrinkles form on my forehead, she says almost laughing, "You have stripes!"

January 8, 2013 - "Mama, you know what I want to be when I grow up?"
"No Lily, what?!"
"I want to be a Mama!"

December 1, 2012 - "Cows lay milk." She said while holding her "pigs in the bum" toy cow. I laughed and asked her where she learned that. She said, "From Jesus."

October 1, 2012 - Lily was talking to "Abecca" and "Acky" this morning. I asked her where Mimi and Lickey were and she said, "Mom, I don't have Mimi & Lickey anymore." Referring to her imaginary buddies, and so I asked, "Why?" and she answered, "Because I don't like a little person, I like a big person!"
So than I asked her more about Abecca and Acky, which I have heard her talking to for a couple months now. They are both girls, Abecca is 3, like Lily, and Acky is 4! I love the imagination of my sweet little girl. Hopefully this means that she got her Daddy's creativity. Not that Paul talks to imaginary people, he just can envision much more than I can :)

August 20, 2012 - "I love my Mommy, I love my Daddy, I love my brother, and I love MYSELF!" I'm glad that she has a good self esteem with high self worth! I would love to take the credit for that little lesson, but then it also makes me wonder what her lesson in nursery was yesterday :)

Lily's First Day of Preschool

This day was a long time coming...and it finally came!! Lily could have started preschool last year but I thought that was a bit redundant to do two years when I didn't even do one (and I turned out just fine). I thought that I would be ecstatic and have no feelings of sadness on this much awaited day. But, to my surprise, I was wrong! I was a little nervous deep down inside as I watched my oldest daughter have her first experience going off into the world on her own. Watching Lily skip around and sing all morning because she knew what the day held for her made it a bit easier. It was more joyous than Christmas morning at our house!

I thought it would be a good addition to the traditional front door/first day of school picture to have Lily write what grade she would be starting and what she wants to be when she grows up. She debated between a Mom and a Teacher, but I was proud to see my job had the edge!

Somehow I think poor little Stew knew what was happening before Lily was even gone. He was extra emotional in the morning which balanced out her extreme excitement. Once we finally made the drop of Lily at school, he kept whimpering, "Sis..gone..sis..gone". It was really heart-breaking. They are the sweetest of friends and I know it will be hard on him to not have his little buddy around all day. But, it will be nice for us to have some one-on-one time. I already have lunch-dates and frozen yogurt runs lined out in my head.

Lily looked as though she had grown two years in the two point five hours she was gone that day. I am so proud of my little "monkey beanie baby girl" and the beautiful, confident, sweet girl that she has become.

Post-Nap Storytime

After Stewart's nap one day I told Lily to go in and keep him company while I finished up some baking. And this is what I found...

I have no doubt that Lily is going to be the best mother! She is already so nurturing and thoughtful to those younger than her. I love seeing the relationship and bond that Lily and Stewart have and I can only hope that it continues throughout their lives.

Lily's Dance Recital '13

Lily had her Spring dance recital with Prestige Dance Company last week. She was adorable up on that stage! I am so proud of the confident, beautiful, little girl she has become. I already got her all registered for next year because she loves dance so much. She is constantly "sha-saying" around the house and showing me all of the moves that Shay has taught her. She is my tiny dancer...

Mother's Day Letters

Dear Lily,
You gave me the oppurtunity to become a momma four years ago. I will never forget that precious moment when your daddy put you in my arms for the first time. You were so tiny and perfect and you have grown into a gorgeous little girl. You have the most beautiful little freckles that fall perfectly on your sweet little nose, cheeks, and forehead. They are one of my favorite things about you! You are such a good little helper, especially when it has to do with making your brother happy. You two are constantly hugging and putting your arms around each other and it makes me so proud that you are such a good sister. Whenever we go on errands or leave the house, I always tell Stew that I am leaving so help him hurry and you always get so concerned for him and tell me to go get him and not leave without him. I am so relieved to know that he will always have you for a big sister.

You are so funny and are developing a quirky little sense of humor (which must have come from your daddy). You are starting to tease and trick me and your daddy all the time. Your favorite is to play the copy-cat game where you say everything I say. I use it my advantage and say things like, "I love my momma sooo much!" because I love to her it come out of your sweet little mouth. Today at church the choir sang Consider the Lilies and it touched my heart. That beautiful song reminds me how special of a little girl you are and how much I have to be thankful for when it come to you. It is such a blessing for me to be able to see you continue to grow and develop into your own little person. Thank you my little Lily for being such an amazing daughter. I love you very much! - Love Momma

Dear Stewart,
You are my little buddy boy and I am so grateful for the special bond that we have. I only hope that it is something you will not grow out of! You sure do love me at this time in your life and are very attached to me. It makes my heart melt every time I see you running towards me, shouting, "Mama, mama" with your little arms outstretched. And the cherry on top of it all is the sweet pat that you give me with your little hands to finish off the squeezy hug! You make me smile everyday because of your tender heart. You are almost two and in that stage where you want to test your limits. I have come to realize in the past couple days just how smart you are too. Every time you do something naughty and I tell you to stop, you throw your arms up in the air and with the most innocent face you say, "DAH, DAH." Not sure what that is, but you know exactly what you are doing because it makes me smile and I cannot continue my little lecture to you.

You are also so quick to fix when you have wronged someone. Whether it is pushing Lily out of your way, biting me (which I know you do out of love but we still have to fix that because I have gotten some major bruises from your strong little teeth), or accidentally hitting me when your rolling all over me, you immediately give a kiss. I hope this is one of your traits throughout your life to always be quick to ask for forgiveness and make right your mistakes. Your kisses are so precious and sincere! I ask for as many as I can each day for fear that you won't be as free to give them in the next couple years. The little smack that comes from your lips is to die for, soo sweet! I love you Bubos and I am so proud that you are mine and daddy's! - Love Momma

Dear Mom,
Anything that I know about motherhood, is because of you! You are the most self-less, giving person that I know. You are constantly serving your family and others around you. I only hope to someday have a portion of the charity that you have. I love being around you and am so grateful to be your only daughter (of course for selfless reasons). My favorite memories growing up were when the boys would go on their male-bonding outings. I was always so excited when they left so that me and you could have all weekend to hang out. I wouldn't trade those time for anything. I hope that as my kids are growing, I am as cool and fun as you are so that they will look forward to spending time with me :)

Now that you are far away from me, I know how much I took you and Dad for granted. Just today I had 15 minutes to kill before I needed to pick Lily up from dance class and I thought, "I wish I could stop up at Mom and Dad's house just to say hi". I miss popping in whenever I wanted whether it was to just free me and the kids from our house for a minute or to hang out for the evening when Paul was out of town. And my intention is not to make you feel bad, I just want you to know how much you are loved and missed! I am so grateful to be your daughter and I am forever blessed for everything that you and Dad taught me and and have done for me. I love you very much! - Love Laura

Daddy-Daughter Date

Paul took Lily on her first daddy-daughter date last week. Lily said to him, "I never been on a date before!" I was a little jealous :) but so glad that they got to spend some precious time together. Paul took her to Station Park to see a movie...

When they got home Lily was soo tired, it was way past bed-time. Paul said he had to cover her eyes a couple of times, so hopefully she doesn't get nightmares! I know that the Wizard of Oz gave me some sleepless nights back in my day.

This is just the first of many daddy-daughter dates my sweet little girl will get to cherish her whole life! She is one lucky girl to have such an amazing daddy that loves her so much.

The Simple Things

Three things that made me so incredibly happy this last weekend that I am reminiscing on already are:

1. Stewart's sweet kisses on my back, arm, hands, and cheeks as I was building the kid's little playhouse. He has been so generous with his smacking lips lately and it is my most favorite thing in the world! No matter how I am feeling, when I hear his little smack and see his arms around me, I melt with my unconditional love that I have for my little buddy.
(picture taken by my Dad in St. George, he emailed it to me after he read this post and I had to share)

2. The "date-night" Paul and I had in the garage finishing setting up the playhouse. It reminded me of our first year of marriage when we were establishing our little apartment as our home. I can't help but laugh every time I see Paul with a screwdriver in one hand, and a little screw in the other. About 65% of the time, he drops that little screw and it makes him so irrational. I love it about him! The little blurts of anger and frustration that come out of him, makes me smile every time. It was a good night!

3. Watching the second session on Sunday of General Conference cuddled up with my little Lily in the cheerio chair. Paul was on his way to Chicago, and I had just put Stew in bed for his nap. That left me and Lily to have some quality time and she was so sweet as she sat there and pointed out the apostles that she knows, "President Monson and President Uchdorf," and asking who the others were. It was a little heaven on Earth listening to the prophets testify of Christ and spending that special time with my little girl.

I am so grateful for quality time that I get to spend with each person in my family. I think that it is so important to spend one-on-one time and build those special memories and moments I hope to cherish forever. When I think back at my time with my parents and brothers, my very most favorite times are when I got to spend one-on-one time with each of them. I hope that my children and I will have solid relationships and that I can show them how much I love them individually.

Lily's Birth Story

I have been putting Lily's birth story off because it has been 4+ years I am having to dig back to. It was however, in my top 3 greatest days of my life, so it shouldn't be too hard to remember...

Paul and I found out that we were having a girl the moment we could, it was around 16 weeks. I was a little shocked at first (which is weird because it is a 50/50 chance), because I always imagined myself having a boy first and I thought everyone needed an older brother. Probably because I am lucky enough to have 3 amazing older brothers. But I quickly got over that feeling and was so ecstatic to finally meet and dress up my sweet little baby girl. She was due February 17, 2009. I stressed more than I think is normal about what we were going to call her when I was pregnant. I had sheets and piles of papers that I had "doodled" all sorts of names. Trying to find that perfect one. But none of them seemed good enough. It was such a big deal to me because this would be my baby's name - forever! It had to be perfect. I really wanted a classic, older name and not one that was just in with a trend. I distinctly remember one day sitting on the barstool in my parents' kitchen discussing names with my mom. She said, "How about Lily?!" And I remember just rolling my eyes at her and saying, "Nah".  Then I remember other people telling me not to stress about it because when I met her, I would know what to name her.

So I was getting bigger, and so was she. The weeks leading up to my due date were difficult. I was so ready to have her and I just wanted to take care of my baby and be her momma. At my 39 week doctors appointment I asked him how he felt about inducing. And to my happy surprise, he said that would be fine and when do I want to schedule it. I didn't even know what to say, I was so happy that I could pick a day and know what she would come then. So I told him that mentally, I could not go a day past my due date. So he scheduled me to come to the hospital at 7:00 a.m. on February 17th! I was so excited that this guessing game of when she would be coming was over. I had a day that I knew she would come, and I think that really helped me get through that last week.

The big day finally came, Paul and I drove up to the hospital and arrived right on time. I was ready to get this started! A hospital admin showed me to my room and had me get changed into the lovely, infamous hospital gown. We sat in the room for a bit before Dr. Spencer came in, obviously in a rush to get things started. I was really surprised as he started rummaging through drawers and cupboards trying to find needles and whatever it was that the nurses would have prepped me with before the doctor would have shown up. Almost as antsy as I was, Dr. Spencer started hooking me up to monitors, giving me an I.V. and then pulled out this LONG, metal hook. Then (sparing too many details) he proceeded to break my water. This was not at all what I expected. It was incredibly painful, and I was shocked that within 10 minutes of arriving at the hospital, my water was breaking. It was clear to me then, that I probably wouldn't be sitting around, laboring for too long. Both the doctor and I wanted to get this "show on the road." I started contracting and laboring progressively the next couple hours. As it got worse, I asked the nurse for the epidural. I remember fearing this part the most. Through my pregnancy, as I talked with other young moms, I was warned about the epidural and that in some cases, it was the worst part of the entire labor and delivery. It felt totally unnatural to be hunched over as a very long needle was being inserting into my back. But I just focused on the bigger picture and how it would relieve the pain I was starting to feel more intensely everywhere else. And I had my sweet husband to grab a hold of with both hands and squeeze his to transfer just a smidgen of the pain I was experiencing that day!

My parents arrived as we were waiting, luckily painlessly, for me to get further along in my laboring. I distinctly remember feeling my face swell, like, an insane amount and almost instantly. It was very bizarre because it came on so suddenly and I could feel the skin on my cheeks, neck, and chin growing tight as they expanded. And I knew it was bad when I mentioned to Paul and my dad that I was swelling. Their faces said it all. The nurse put an oxygen mask on me then, not sure if it is just a standard procedure, but it didn't worry me either way. Then as she was checking the computer monitors, she got a little concerned and informed me that the baby's heart rate was dropping every time I would contract. She took me off of the pitocin meds they were giving me through the I.V. that helped speed up the labor. But after a little time of waiting to see if that helped the babe, which it did, but turned out that I completely stopped contracting, and was at a stand-still. The doctor then came in to help me understand what my options were. He explained that they were unsure why the baby was having a difficult time through the contractions. So, they could put me back on the pitocin, and just monitor the baby carefully, or I could go in for a c-section and get the baby out immediately. It was a very easy decision for me, I said I wanted to have them get her out now. He agreed that if it were his baby, he would do the same. It was comforting knowing that I felt good about my decision and that the doctor thought it was also the better option.

So almost immediately, they started wheeling my bed down the hallway and into the operating room. Paul got to stay by my side, but I was disappointed that my parents wouldn't be able to be in the room when I delivered. I had wanted them there, but only the spouse is allowed into the operating room, so they would have to wait a little longer to meet her. The anesthesiologist became my new best friend. Along with Paul, we was up by my head the entire time. He began to give me more medicine through my epidural line that made me numb from my throat down. I remember at one point telling him it was difficult to breath. He said to just relax and breath normally, that it felt like my throat was closing, but that it was just the medicine making it numb. There was an entire little team of nurses getting everything prepared. They put a sheet up vertically by my chest, so that I wasn't able to see anything going on. I told Paul that I wanted him to watch the whole thing, and tell me EXACTLY what was going on behind that sheet after. I wanted all the crazy details. He stood up to watch, they began cutting through my skin and Paul quickly sat back down. He couldn't do it. This part is difficult to describe. I felt a lot of pulling and pressure, and it was just unreal to think about what they were doing. They were getting my little baby out. At 3:15 p.m. she was delivered, I remember having this huge relief when I heard her sweet little cry. I couldn't see her, but I knew that she was perfect from that strong set of lungs I could hear. I was lying there, looking straight up at the ceiling feeling so blessed to have her here when directly above me she came into view floating above the sheet. It was only about a 3 second glimpse of her before they took her back. She was so red and squished. Then the doctor wiped her up and for another 10 seconds, they held her to the side of me so that I could see my precious little baby girl.

Paul went with the baby and nurses into the nursery to get her checked and cleaned up. I laid on the table as they puzzled me back together again. And I really think that is exactly what they did. It felt as though my organs were sitting on top of my belly and one by one the doctor was putting things back where they belonged. It was crazy, wish I could have seen it! He stitched me up and about 30 minutes later I was being wheeled back to my room where my parents and now Paul's parents were waiting. I told them as much as I knew, which wasn't much at that point. Paul came back to the room and said, "She has red hair!" I didn't know if he was serious or not. During the pregnancy we had always joked about it and knew there was a slim chance of it, but to have it actually happen, I was so surprised. Then finally, about 45 minutes after I heard those first cries, the nurse was carrying my little baby girl into the room. Paul handed her to me and it was one of the greatest moments of my life. To finally be holding this precious, heaven-sent, baby that would be mine forever, was amazing. She was perfect, with beautiful, luciously long, auburn hair. It was such a special time being with our parents and holding her. Everything was perfect in that moment.

I remember soon after getting her into my arms, having a little panic thinking, "I have no idea what she looks like, I didn't know what her name would be!" Paul and I had come to the hospital with two names, I favored Lucy, and he wanted Lily. But we liked them both. The day after she was born, Paul very seriously came to me and said, "I think that her name should be Lily." I didn't know what to say, he seemed so inspired my the way he spoke, that how was I suppose to argue with that. Reluctantly, I agreed but I was actually freaking out inside, hoping that was the right decision. And of course, it was. She is our sweet little Lily Ann Heslop.

G&G Stewart Visit

I will let the pictures tell this story...

It's pretty clear that Lily especially loved this special visit!
